The History of Trophy

What is a Trophy?

A trophy is a token of recognition. It is a form of award that is given to someone who has achieved a specific status that is worthy of recognition.

Trophies are commonly given to winners of sporting events, along with medals and certificates.

Origin of Trophy

From the Greek word, tropaion, the term has been derived over the years and was later coined in English in the year 1550 as the term that we know it today. The word trophy originally means 'prize of war'.

In the ancient times, there were no trophies given. In Greece, for example, it was laurel wreaths that were bestowed upon winners of Olympic games. In the late 1600s, it was chalices that were given to victors of sports. Traditionally, these chalices or 'cups' were made in silver. These 'cups' further evolved through the years. At present, there are now numerous 'World Cups' given worldwide for various sporting events. Trophies designed with cup shapes are the most common ones that are given to sports winners today.

Modern Trophy

Trophies today are given not only in the field of sports. They are also given at:
* Schools - to recognise achievers at school.
* Corporations/Businesses - to recognise outstanding employees.
* Film Festivals - to recognise the quality of work of actors, actresses, directors and others.
* Other events

Today, trophies have a wide variety of shapes and designs. From the expensive silver cup that it once was, a trophy can now be made using other materials such as glass, marble, crystal and other synthetic products. These changes made trophies more affordable and the awarding of trophies common.

Trophy designs have also changed. Aside from the 'cup' design, trophies usually represent the event that it is in. For example, in a basketball event, it is common to see trophies in the shape of a basketball player or basketball. One of  the most popular sports today is golf and golf trophies usually take the shape of a golf ball or a golfer statue.

No matter what material is used or whatever shape it is, a trophy's value will remain unchanged. It is an award - a reminder of one's achievement that has been recognised by many and therefore a reminder of something that is worth remembering for a lifetime. It is a priceless award no matter what.
