The Importance of Giving Awards

An award is given to recognise achievement. No matter what field it represents, it is important to give an award to show that a person’s achievement is appreciated and commended. Awards are commonly given in the following fields or areas:
  • Sporting Events
  • Academic Institutions
  • Corporate Events
Among these, the area that gives the most awards is in the sporting world. Unlike academic institutions and corporate events, there are many different sub areas in the field of sports. There are various types of sporting events and every declared winner is bestowed with a unique award to celebrate his or her victory in that particular event. Some of the most popular sporting events where prizes include trophies, medals and plaques are:
  • Golf
  • Basketball
  • Football
  • Equestrian
  • Motorsport
  • Swimming

What are the common forms of awards?

Trophies

The most common form of award is a trophy. The usual type of trophy that can be seen is the cup shape trophy, which originated from the chalices or cups that were first given in early times. In fact, this is where the name of the famous ‘World Cup’ games was derived. A trophy can be made out of different materials such as gold, silver or metal. The design of trophies has evolved over time, with today’s awards demonstrating interesting shapes and forms. From quirky golf trophies to figure trophies, you will find an infinite variety of designs to choose from.

Medals

Medals are awards that are usually categorised into three: Gold, Silver and Bronze. The materials from which these are made usually determine the rank of achievement. Medals are commonly worn around the neck and are traditionally presented during sports events like the Olympics. They are often used to acknowledge achievements at school.

Plaques

Plaques are usually given at formal occasions and events. It is a form of award that is often targeted towards the corporate industry and related areas. Plaques are usually made of glass or metal. Just like trophies, the design of plaques today has evolved and we are now presented with a lot of creative options.

Why are awards given?

Awards are given to recognise an achievement, a victory or any great act that is praise worthy. Awards are a way to show that a person is both appreciated and celebrated. The very essence of giving an award is to recognise the expertise and outstanding achievement in a particular field. Awards can also encourage people to do better and they can serve as a form of motivation. That is why they are frequently used in the education sector.

Golf as a Sport

There are various types of sports out there. One of the most popular ones is the ball sport. Some examples of ball sport are basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, football and golf. Among these ball sport, golf is the one with the widest area for playing. The golf course is not as limited as a basketball court or a football field. Although the size of a golf course may vary, it is still wider when compared to other ball sport.

What is Golf?

Golf is a game of precision and calculation. The players, called golfers, compete by using different kinds of clubs in order to hit golf balls into a series of holes in the golf course. Their aim is to put the ball into a hole with the fewest number of strokes.

A golf competition usually takes hours and hours to complete, depending on the number of players involved in the game, as well as the size of the golf course.

Golf Clubs

In order to hit a golf ball, a player must use golf clubs. These golf clubs are specially designed to help a player hit the ball perfectly and produce a desired effect. Basically, there are three types of golf clubs and these are:

Woods – it is a large head type of club and it is meant to make the ball ‘fly’ into the distance, once swung.
Irons – compared to the wood, this one has a shorter shaft and is ideal to be used in shorter range type of shots.
Putters – as the name implies, this balanced club is simply designed to give the ball a little push in order to roll into a hole.

Although the basic only requires 3 types of golf clubs, there is another type called hybrids. This fourth class is somewhat a combination of woods and irons. The total number of clubs allowed in a bag during a game is 14.

Forms of Golf

The basic forms of golf include match play, stroke play, bogey competition, skins, 9 – points, stableford and team play. A team play has its own unofficial variations and some of these are called scramble, champagne scramble, wolf, best - ball and others.

Golf Tournaments and Awards

The winners of golf tournaments commonly receive silver golf silver cups, golf trophies, golf salvers and other similar forms of award. Among the most prominent golf tournaments worldwide include PGA Tour, Champions Tour, European Tour and LPGA Tour.

Golf is one of the most popular sporting events today. We hear about prominent golf players like Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, John Daly and others caused much stir with their remarkable games. The people’s interest in this sport has truly increased that many are starting to give it a try for themselves.
